Channel (C) Section — Including Shear Centre

Section Properties · Channel · A, C, I, S, r, Z, J, shear centre e
1

Geometry

Overall width b, depth h, flange thickness tf, web thickness tw
Shear centre S lies outside the web, at a distance e from the web centreline on the side away from the flanges: e = 3b₁²tf / (6b₁tf + h₁tw), b₁ = b − tw/2, h₁ = h − tf (thin-walled). If the load does not pass through S, the section twists.
2

Area, centroid, moment of inertia, elastic section modulus, radius of gyration
3

Plastic modulus and torsion

Zx, Zy, shape factor, J
4

Principal axes

Ixy, θ, I₁, I₂
